We had a wonderful two week stay at the Sun Outdoors RV Resort in North Salt Lake City, Utah. On our way there, we stopped at the Bear River Migratory Bird Center to enjoy the views, trails, and to watch the Nebraska football game. It was the first time that we had stopped for several hours on a travel day, and it worked out perfectly. Sun Outdoors is located on the Jordan River Parkway trail, which connects to the Legacy and Denver & Rio Grande Western Trail. I had a fabulous time biking and running on these trails, and participating in a 200 mile virtual ride to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Mike thoroughly enjoyed multiple birding trips: Bear River auto tour, Farmington Bay Wildlife Management area, Lee Kay Ponds, Big Mountain Summit, Storm Mountain, and the local dump. He also went on a guided bird trip for his birthday.
Our favorite side trips were to Antelope Island State Park and Big Cotton Canyon in Brighton, UT. Getting to see the “Great Salt Lake” checked a big item off of our bucket list. It was a little sad to see the low water levels due to the drought, but it was still beautiful. We drove through most of the park and especially enjoyed the causeway, Fielding Garr Ranch, and hiking the Lady Finger Point Trail. We saw lots of birds, bison, and antelope/pronghorn. Silver Lake in Big Cotton Canyon surpassed our expectations. It had a gorgeous trail and we were able to safely watch two moose in their natural environment. We also hiked to Twin Lakes and Solitaire Lake which were spectacular. Our trip ended with a fun birthday dinner at the Red Iguana, which is featured in “Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.”
