Rio Grande Valley for the Winter

We are officially in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas through March. Each year it seems we arrive earlier at our winter destination. This is partially to avoid snow, but mostly in order to obtain premiums RV spots in optimal weather during the winter, you need to not only book well in advance, but also stay longer. Retama Village in Mission, Texas is a really beautiful resort which provides us with a huge site that includes a casita, an outdoor seating area and a shed for our bikes, etc. The casita is cozy, with a bathroom, living area (with sleeper sofa), and a small kitchen. It is really nice to have the extra space to work out, watch different TV shows, and of course, a place for our kids to stay when they come to visit. The resort is a mixture of regular homes, homes with RV ports, and RV lots with Casitas. It has many amenities and lots of activities. Our favorite part however, is the fact that Bentsen State Park/World Birding Center is only a half mile away. Mike is loving observing the wildlife and hiking through the park. There is a bike path right next to the resort great roads for running/biking, as well as nearby mountain biking trails. It is really a perfect location for our active lifestyle and the weather is fantastic.

We took a short trip to nearby South Padre Island(SPI) this month to enjoy the beach and some Christmas festivities. We stayed at a nice KOA on the bay side with a lovely view. SPI has a wonderful World Birding Center, boardwalks and nature walks, as well as a cool sea turtle rehabilitation center. The beach was beautiful and the holiday lights in the palm trees got us in the Christmas spirit.
