Arrowhead State Park in Canadian, Oklahoma was a very pleasant surprise. We had a lovely campsite with plenty of open space. It was great to sit out and read by our fire ring and for bird watching. The park was wonderful to bike through and around Lake Eufaula. We stayed just one night in Pittsburg, Kansas but managed to find a great trail and spot a beautiful Baltimore Oriole in our campsite.
Our next stop was Merriam, Kansas to visit my family. It was a very different visit due to Covid-19. We definitely made the most of the opportunity and tried our best to social distance. The weather unfortunately was unseasonably cool, so we weren’t able to spend much family time outside, but did get to enjoy my Mother’s garden (main blog picture). We got very creative and played the game “Farkle”, each with our own set of dice and rolling at a table in the middle of the garage. It was great just to spend time with family, especially to celebrate Mother’s Day with my Mom. Since we come to Kansas City twice a year, we also were able to take care of dentist and doctor appointments while we were in town.
Our next destination was Omaha, Nebraska. Our usual campsite is a county park which was not open due Covid-19, so we stayed a few days in Gretna at a KOA. It was farther from family, but gave us an opportunity to enjoy some areas we had not explored before. Mike went birding with his sister Mary Jo in nearby Shramm Park, fishing with his brother Steve at Prairie Queen, and I enjoyed running in the Chalco Recreation Area. We scheduled annual service on our RV while we were in town. It was not the best experience, however, they did find that one of our front tires had some damage and needed to be replaced. It is definitely better to get news like this when you are in a position to get it fixed quickly, rather than when you are on the route. Yikes! We “mooch-docked” at Mike’s Mom’s house for the second half of our visit. Mike was able to complete most of a DIY project, replacing our 26′ slide topper with his brother Steve. It was great visiting family, especially getting to spend time with Mike’s Mom.
