Oklahoma had some unexpected beauty and hills! We stayed in Poteau, which is close to the Arkansas border. Poteau is the home of Cavanal Hill, which is the “largest hill” in the world. It is one foot short of the American designation of a mountain, which is 2000 ft. The RV Park we stayed at was on a large parcel of land with two lakes, bison, horses and ponies. It was very peaceful and had a great views of the surrounding hills.
Unfortunately, storms continued to follow us in Oklahoma. Poteau is in a valley and is rarely impacted by tornadoes, and thankfully that held true during our visit. Once the rain stopped, we were able to go on several hikes and a bike ride on the nearby Old Frisco Trail. We had a great time exploring Lake Wister State Park and the surrounding area. We did quite a bit of birding, especially in the part of the lake managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Our favorites spotted on this trip were the Summer Tanager and the Indigo Bunting.
Next we are headed to Missouri, and closely watching the flood waters, especially the Arkansas River.
