Our first visit to New Orleans was amazing. We were so fortunate to be able to be in this city during early Spring. The weather was fantastic and the color from the flowers was spectacular. We stayed in Bayou Segnette State Park, which was about 20-30 minutes from Downtown. It was a small park without full-hooks, however, the natural setting and proximity to the sights definitely made it a good campsite. The state park was also very close to the swamp tours, so of course we had to take one to see lots of alligators, etc. Our tour guides told us that they were on a some episodes of “Swamp People” and were pretty funny. We took the ferry to the French Quarter area a couple of times and really loved the vibe of “NOLA”. The people, architecture, food, music and ambiance were really special. We enjoyed the food, especially the beignets from Cafe Beignets! Our favorite sights were Jackson Square and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.
The next stop on our journey was De Funiak Springs, Fl. We stayed in a quite RV resort on a lake. We had not had the chance to kayak in a while, so we appreciated getting on the water again. Mike also discovered that an entrance to the Florida Scenic trail was nearby, so we got in some mountain biking and hiking. The area was unexpectedly quaint and historic. The city of De Funaik Springs has over six million lights at Christmas time. I loved running in charming Chipley Park with a large pond, tons of stately homes and large magnolia trees.
We would recommend visiting both cities if you ever get the chance. New Orleans was a city on our bucket list, and we will definitely visit again. The next stop on our journey is central Florida.
