Montrose, Colorado is surrounded by majestic nature on all four sides with the San Juan Mountains to the south, the Uncompahgre Plateau to the west, Grand Mesa to the north, and the Black Canyon to the east. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was definitely the highlight of our trip. We enjoyed several scenic drives and especially loved the Chasm and Painted Rock overlooks. Hiking and sunsets in the canyon were truly exceptional. There were many scenic drives in the area that were truly amazing. My favorite was the San Juan Skyway which offered wrap around views of the 14,000 foot San Juan Mountains, snow-capped peaks of the Cimarron Mountains, victorian towns and included the “Million Dollar Highway”. The Uncompahgre River Trail was very close to our campsite, so we were able to ride and run multiple times along the river with gorgeous mountain views. This is definitely an area to add to your bucket list.
Next stop Moab, Utah!
