We are so excited to add a new state to our RV journey; Michigan. We have really wanted to visit this state for quite awhile, as we have heard so many good things about it, especially from other RV’ers. Our first stop was Kalamazoo. We stayed at a great spot at Markin Glen County Campground with a concrete pad, full hookup’s, a lovely pond, beach and trails. Mike really enjoyed birding right in the park and I loved biking on the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.
Our next stop was Durand, Mi. We stayed at Holiday Shores RV & Golf Resort. It was one of those sites that looked much better on their website. It was on a cute little lake and had nice walking paths, but was mostly a mobile/prefab home community. The weather wasn’t great while we there, so we did not get out and explore much. The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge and Auto Tour, were definitely the highlights while we were in Durand.
Northern Bear Paw in Tawas city was a remote and beautiful RV Park. It was close to several national wildlife forests, refuges and a great State Park. Mike took a tour while we were there with an Audubon group, and was able to see a Kirtland’s Warbler, one of the rarest songbirds in North America. We went birding together at Tuttle Marsh and at Tawas Point State Park. At the state park we were able to see a Piping Plover nesting, which was pretty cool. We also saw a ton of mayflies when we were hiking. Wow, they are big and they definitely liked Mike’s green jacket. He had like 25 on him at one time. Thankfully they don’t bite! I had a lot of fun biking from the State Park to the Alabaster Township, which had great views of Lake Huron.
Next stop is Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island. We absolutely can’t wait!
