Mackinac Island and Mackinaw City, Michigan definitely lived up to everything we had heard from friends and fellow RVers. We stayed at Mill Creek Campground in Mackinaw City, which we would highly recommend. Mike was able to snag a great campsite when the resort website opened on December 1st. It is definitely worth it to us to plan and book sites way in advance in order to stay in nice campgrounds in the locations that we want to visit. Mill Creek is right on Lake Huron with excellent views of the Mackinac Bridge. It is an absolutely huge campground with lots of amenities, next to the North Central biking trail, and just a little over two miles from the ferry to Mackinac Island. I had a great time biking the North Central, North Eastern and North Western crushed gravel trails and through Mackinaw City. The best part of our stay was of course taking the ferry to Mackinac Island and exploring all around the island. We recommend arriving early and biking around the Island before the crowds arrive. We took our bikes with us on the ferry, and were already biking by 7:45 a.m. It was so lovely to bike the motor vehicle free roads with very few tourists! We especially loved Arch Rock, the quaint architecture, horse and buggies, and fudge! I really liked biking the interior trails where you could see a lot more history and it was not as crowded during peak hours.
We did have an unfortunate issue with our tow connection/base plate that we discovered when we were unhooking the truck from the RV. It had become loose, which could be a serious issue. It was a weekend, and we could not find anyone to fix. Mike took everything apart, (with a little help from me) and discovered that the dealer who installed it did not secure it correctly. The only parts he needed were some bolts. It was a lot of work, and potentially saved us well over a thousand dollars. Pretty impressive with just me as a helper! Fortunately, it really didn’t negatively impact our stay too much. Especially since we could just relax at the mile of private beach at the campground when we needed a break.
Next stop: finally getting to go to Canada!
