The geology, history and simple beauty of Clear Creek Canyon in the Fish Lake National Forest and Fremont Indian State Park gave us plenty to see, learn and do while we were in Sevier, Utah. We saw our first petroglyphs when we were in Dubois, WY last October, and we became really interested in this art form. We could not have picked a better place to explore hundreds of petroglyphs and pictographs. Fremont Indian State Park & Museum had many points of interest throughout the park and provided detailed information and maps to help us locate rock art and other historical sites. One of our favorites was “Newspaper Rock”, a panel that had over 250 petroglyphs. We stayed at the Sam Stowe Canyon campground in a very large private site that even had petroglyphs on the canyon walls next to our campfire. It is a pretty remote area, so we did not have a phone or internet connection. We drove into nearby Richfield, UT and found other places where we could use our hot spot when we needed to use our phones or laptop. One of these spots was a rails-to-trails parking area where we frequently went to bike or run. The ‘Candy Mountain Express Trail” was a great paved path through the canyon and along the Sevier River. We saw a coyote when we were biking from our campsite to the trail and several snakes (yuck) on the trail. On our last day in Sevier, we drove the “Canyon of Gold” tour to learn about the history of gold mining in the Bullion Canyon. It was a beautiful drive through the Fishlake National Forest and ended with a hike to waterfall.
Next stop: Zion National Park!
