We loved our winter stay in Arizona, but it definitely feels good to be on the road again and headed to see family. Our first stop was for short stay in Deming, NM. We stayed in an “Escapees” (full-time RVing organization) RV park, Dream Catcher, which was nice to check out, especially the great rate. It was just off the highway and close to a couple of state parks. We took a nice hike on the Spring Canyon Trail in Rock Hound State Park.
Davis Mountains State Park in Fort Davis, Texas was a very quiet and relaxing stay. We had a great campsite with full hook-ups, but we did not have any internet. It was an extra peaceful stay with great hiking trails and wildlife viewing. Mike especially liked the two bird blinds located in the park. However, some of our best birding happened at our campsite. Mike spotted the nest of some Elf Owls in a nearby telephone pole. They were so cute, and a little creepy when all you could see through binoculars were their eyes. Aoudad “Barbary” Sheep are also in the park. They are originally from North Africa and were brought to Texas in the 1950’s as exotic game. The Civilian Conservation Corps built most of the park including Skyline drive, a small hotel (Indian Lodge), many beautiful stone structures and of course hiking trails. Our only disappointment during our stay is that we weren’t able to view the dark skies from the nearby McDonald’s Observatory. We will definitely pass through the area again, to check this out, as well as several interesting towns and activities nearby.
Next stop, Big Bend National Park!
