Chatfield State Park in Littleton, Colorado is one of our favorite places to stay in Colorado. It has wonderful spacious full hook-up RV campsites nestled in nature, and so many wonderful trails and the reservoir to enjoy. The last time we were here, we had to cut our visit short, to escape from snow, so it was really nice to stay for two weeks. I absolutely love having multiple options to run, bike, hike, swim or paddle board; and this park definitely has them. The trails within the park or the nearby Waterton Canyon or Highline Canal trail are beautiful and so much fun. Mike definitely enjoyed biking and birding as well; especially seeing Bighorn Sheep on bike rides to Waterton Canyon. Unfortunately we were staying at the park during the Quarry Fire, which appears to be human caused. Thankfully, we were never in any danger, however, air quality and smoke did impact us. It was really cool however, to watch airplanes get water from the reservoir right next to us to fight the fire, and to see that they were able to put it completely out.
While in Littleton, we took the opportunity to drive our truck on the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway. It is 28 miles long and is the highest paved road in North America. We had incredible views of the Continental Divide, mountain goats, alpine wildflowers, marmots, and Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine Trees. The summit is 14,130 feet high, and is the easiest short climb of a 14er!
We did a lot of cleaning and maintenance work while at Chatfield. We also got new tires for our truck. Mike tried to resolve an RV engine issue, but it looks like we will need to get service at our next stop at St. Vrain State Park in Longmont, Colorado. Oh well, it can be all fun and games.
