We were so excited to finally be in Canada, after having to cancel our trips in 2020 and 2021. There were two long bridges to cross, the Mackinac Bridge and Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, and of course going through customs; which was a pretty simple process. We stayed at the KOA in Sault Ste. Marie which was truly a lovely campground, and we had a huge campsite. The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site was very interesting. It had nice trails and the best part was being able to watch the “Soo Locks” open and close, as boats moved through the canal. We also enjoyed the Downtown Sault Ste. Marie boardwalk and biking on the “Hub” trail. We took a road trip to Wawa, Ontario to explore Lake Superior Provincial Park. It was a beautiful drive with views of Lake Superior and mountains along the TransCanada Highway. We saw so many waterfalls and gorgeous scenery. Our favorite hike was to Agawa rock to see the pictographs and several cool rock formations. Agawa Rock was pretty slippery, thankfully neither of us fell in! We stayed overnight in a hotel in Wawa, Ontario. Quite an interesting city with the huge Wawa Goose welcoming visitors. We of course had coffee at Tim Hortons, had some “beaver tails”, and loved the friendliness of the Canadian people throughout our stay. Sault Ste. Marie even had a grocery store called “Rome’s”, which was pretty cool. The weather was in the 40’s and 50’s in the morning and 60 and 70’s during the day throughout our stay. Very pleasant! Mike had fun birding in several local parks and recreation areas, and being able to log birds from a new country in e-bird. Julie took a day trip across the border to Taquahama Falls State Park in Michigan, and saw the most amazing waterfalls. We wished we could stay longer, and hope to come back and explore more someday.
Next stop, Picture Rock National Lakeshore!
