Our first stop in Utah was Dead Horse State Park in Moab. Dead Horse Point is located at the end of a mesa 2,000 feet above the Colorado River, on the edge of Canyonlands National Park, and close to Arches National Park. The park has outstanding views of the river, the surrounding canyon country, fabulous sunsets and amazing night skies. To top it off the park had fantastic mountain biking and running/hiking trails. The campground had large RV sites with covered picnic shelters with electric only hookups, and no showers. We came prepared with a full water tank, etc., and experienced no issues.
It was phenomenal to be able to visit two spectacular national parks: Arches and Canyonlands, during our stay in Moab. We went to both parks very early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the heat, and this strategy worked out very well. It was a cloudy day when we went to Canyonlands, so unfortunately we did not get many good pictures. Island in the Sky is a mesa between the Green and Colorado rivers and from there you can see across multiple canyons for almost 100 miles on the horizon. We thoroughly enjoyed the scenic drive, overlooks and trails. Arches National Park has the world’s largest concentration of natural sandstone arches. The park contains over 2,000 arches, and also has a wide variety other geological formations, such as “Balanced Rock”. The drive through the park was breathtaking. We took several hikes to see the Skyline, Sand Dune, Broken and Delicate Arches and saw countless others on our drive. We also took a fun boat ride on the Colorado River to see even more canyons and arches. Moab is a fantastic travel destination with so much to see and do. We will definitely being coming back.
Next stop: another state park in Utah, this time with full hook-ups!
